Selective Sweeps
Abstract: It is of great biological importance to discover genes under
natural selection. One approach to find these is given by the model of
selective sweeps, introduced by Maynard Smith and Haigh (1974): assume
a strongly beneficial allele entered a population, quickly inreased in
frequency and recently fixed. Because of the short fixation time,
linked neutral variants increase in frequency together with the
beneficial allele. I will discuss recent theoretical findings on the
model of selective sweeps and discuss applications in evolutionary
biology and cancer research.
